New Research Shows Real Wireless Power to Significantly Impact IoT Growth and Corporate Sustainability Goals

The big question: how much will wireless power impact our society, economy, and environment in the next few years? Or will batteries and wires continue to reign?

The answer can be found in a recent report from Sustaintalytics, a highly respected and independent research firm. Ossia asked Sustainalytics if it would measure the impact that Cota Real Wireless Power could have, especially on the burgeoning IoT market, in the next five to 10 years.

About Real Wireless Power

Cota, as you may know, is Ossia’s patented over-the air, at-a-distance wireless power technology that has already been approved for use in more than 50 countries. It is a replacement for batteries and wires, and does not require line of sight or a charging pad to deliver power.

About the Independent Research Firm

Sustainalytics, a Morningstar Company, is a leading independent Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and corporate governance research, ratings, and analytics firm. For more than 25 years, they have helped companies from around the world identify, understand, and manage ESG-driven risks and opportunities.

Corporations leverage ESGs in order to plan ahead and protect the value of their company and products. Viewing company products and practices through an ESG lens helps improve long-term business performance, avoid the unexpected, and be prepared for inevitable change. Evaluating the impact of Real Wireless Power is crucial to this analysis.

How Real Wireless Power Measures Up

The key takeaways from the Sustainalytics report are impressive. The bottom line is, batteries and wires are limiting IoT growth and do not support organizations’ sustainable development goals. With the current rate of IoT growth and electronic device innovation, current power delivery methods are not only limiting to what is technically possible, they are simply not sustainable — economically or environmentally. Real Wireless Power solves this dilemma.

Here are some highlights.

  1. Real Wireless Power enables products to be developed lighter in weight and with a longer expected lifespan, which reduces waste. From the report: “Ossia will enable waste avoidance and associated emissions avoidance for industrial and retail end-users of the technology.”
  2. The economic potential of Real Wireless Power is exponential. In just three small use cases that Sustainalytics measured, up to 5 billion wirelessly powered ambient/vibration sensors will be sold by 2027. These use cases represent only about 0.5% of SoftBank’s 2025 predictions and 1% of Cisco’s expected 2030 IoT devices. SoftBank and Arm predict that a trillion devices will generate $11 trillion in value by 2025.  And Cisco expects 500 billion IoT devices to be connected to the Internet by 2030. Sustainalytics' estimation of 5 billion sold is only a fraction of the total effect wireless power will have, which could easily be at a scale that is an order of magnitude larger (60 to 120 times multiplier) as the market matures.
  3. Real Wireless Power can help fulfill ESGs. RF-based wireless power that is delivered over-the-air and at-a-distance, like Cota, is positioned to “advance a number of key UN Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] including Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and Responsible Consumption and Production,” according to the Sustainalytics report.

Other ways of looking at how the Real Wireless Power will dramatically impact our society, environment, and economy in the next decade are as follows:

  • Between 41,000-83,000 kilotons waste avoided
  • 238,000-476,000 standard containers (40 feet) of battery waste eliminated
    • The equivalent of 3600 miles of hazardous battery waste!
  • Equivalent of 66,000-132,000 cars removed from the road
  • 468-936 tonnes of lithium avoided
  • 936M-1.87B liters of water saved
    • That’s as much as 720 Olympic-sized pools!
  • 306,500-613,000 emissions avoided (tCO2e)

Cota Real Wireless Power is scalable, sustainable power that is being leveraged today in several use cases globally. Regulatory approvals include the FCC, UKCA, and CE, and cover commercial and consumer applications without any distance limitations, with the exception of the US, where Cota is currently certified for commercial use with distance parameters. Additional FCC certifications are anticipated for broader applications.

Alternative “wireless” solutions in the market, including Qi (charging pad or surface) charging and energy harvesting (or ambient power harvesting), and others in development, such as line-of-sight “beaming” wireless technologies have severe limitations to rapid innovation and IoT growth. These technologies can be considered complementary to Real Wireless Power, but they don’t solve the problem on their own. Cota Real Wireless Power is the only available technology well positioned to support the rapid growth of IoT and its society-transforming potential, decrease our environmental footprint, and reduce costs associated with the production, management, and disposal of batteries.

Cota Real Wireless Power technology is available for license and through manufacturing partners, packaged as the Cota Power Station, Cota Power Table, Cota Ceiling Tile (transmitter), Cota QRx (receiver), and other forms for facilitated integrations. Ossia is poised to help with development kits and technology licensing of Cota.
