New Research Shows Real Wireless Power to Significantly Impact IoT Growth and Corporate Sustainability Goals

The answer can be found in a recent report from Sustaintalytics, a highly respected and independent research firm. Ossia asked Sustainalytics if it would measure the impact that Cota Real Wireless Power could have, especially on the burgeoning IoT market, in the next five to 10 years.

The key takeaways from the Sustainalytics report are impressive. The bottom line is, batteries and wires are limiting IoT growth and do not support organizations’ sustainable development goals. With the current rate of IoT growth and electronic device innovation, current power delivery methods are not only limiting to what is technically possible, they are simply not sustainable — economically or environmentally. In just three small use cases that Sustainalytics measured, up to 5 billion wirelessly powered ambient/vibration sensors will be sold by 2027. These use cases represent only about 0.5% of SoftBank’s 2025 predictions and 1% of Cisco’s expected 2030 IoT devices. SoftBank and Arm predict that a trillion devices will generate $11 trillion in value by 2025.  And Cisco expects 500 billion IoT devices to be connected to the Internet by 2030. Sustainalytics' estimation of 5 billion sold is only a fraction of the total effect wireless power will have, which could easily be at a scale that is an order of magnitude larger (60 to 120 times multiplier) as the market matures.
  3. Real Wireless Power can help fulfill ESGs. RF-based wireless power that is delivered over-the-air and at-a-distance, like Cota, is positioned to “advance a number of key UN Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] including Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and Responsible Consumption and Production,” according to the Sustainalytics report.

Other ways of looking at how the Real Wireless Power will dramatically impact our society, environment, and economy in the next decade are as follows:

  • Between 41,000-83,000 kilotons waste avoided
  • 238,000-476,000 standard containers (40 feet) of battery waste eliminated
    • The equivalent of 3600 miles of hazardous battery waste!
  • Equivalent of 66,000-132,000 cars removed from the road
  • 468-936 tonnes of lithium avoided
  • 936M-1.87B liters of water saved
    • That’s as much as 720 Olympic-sized pools!
  • 306,500-613,000 emissions avoided (tCO2e)
