Preparing for a World that Does Not Need Charging

If 5G is already challenging the status quo of our power infrastructures, what will 6G do in the next decade?

At Ossia, we’re not only considering the power needs of today’s technology and the emerging 5G network, but also our power needs into the next decade.

History shows us that as mobile devices and IoT become more sophisticated, so must the networks and power sources that support them.

With 5G featuring technical benefits including massive connectivity, low latency, high speed, and high capacity, we’re already seeing the demand for more convenient, environmentally friendly, sustainable, safe, and scalable power solutions.

Wireless power is up to the challenge.

Wireless Power Enables Emerging Technologies in the Decades Ahead

Ossia developed Cota Real Wireless Power to not only be uniquely positioned to support the current and upcoming needs of 5G technology, but also that of the visionary next generation, 6G, into the 2030s.

Just as batteries and wires won’t keep up with the demands of 5G and its proliferation of IoT devices, traditional power methods will definitely not keep up with our future tech. In fact, in the 2030s, we will live in a world where devices will not need to be charged at all. Power will come over the air, through radio frequency (RF) signals.

How do we know? Because 5G is already emerging into mainstream, slowed mostly due to technical issues such as network availability and the high technological requirements it demands from not only personal mobile devices, but also and especially nascent commercial applications, like Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR). 5G promised to bring the possibilities of IoT to the world, but without wireless power to enable the projected trillion devices, it may never reach its full potential.

And we, as a society, really benefit from 5G going mainstream. It will make working from home — or from anywhere — much easier. It will more securely and efficiently enable the remote management of buildings, vehicles, drones, delivery, and transportation systems. It will allow medical professionals to remotely provide healthcare assistance, without physically being in the same location as the patient. It will empower us to develop a more optimized distance education process, so we can learn anything from anyone, anywhere. Although doing things remotely has been partially enabled by wireless communication, it is that darn power cable that prevents true remote and unsupervised activity – something that remote wireless power can easily do today.

RF-based power is the most viable option we have to support seamless and ubiquitous powering. It shifts the paradigm from charging to ubiquitous powering in the background, wherever and whenever. When power is available in your home, car, local shops, work etc., the paradigm of worrying about where and when you will get to charge your devices will no longer exist. All your devices, IoT and sensors will be automatically powered all the time, eliminating the ‘charging’ expectations.

When 5G really gets going, we’ll see the opportunities for 6G, which will provide opportunities for even greater connectivity across multitudes of devices.

Wireless Power Plus 6G Will Help Solve Social Problems

There is so much information on Earth. The next generation network, 6G, will allow us to gather such a large amount of information from a physical space, transfer it to the cloud, analyze that data through AI and machine learning-augmented processes to capture meaning, and then provide actionable insights back to us on the ground: Quickly and reliably.

Imagine the layers and layers of billions of sensors connected to the 6G-enabled backbone all over the world that will:

  • Solve challenging social problems, including the spread of viruses through connected consumer health monitoring devices
  • Expand and improve communication and collaboration between people globally
  • Enable 3D holographic and communication systems in every office that use all five senses for a more engaging experience
  • Offer entertainment that is as rich as being there, but isn’t confined to a time or space

All of this is made possible by 6G, which in turn will be enabled by wireless power.

The demand for more advanced services and knowledge at our fingertips — such as the transmission of images and sensing data in near real time — will lead to higher demands in edge computing and processing, which will drive higher demands in power.

Wireless power will enable this future reality. When extreme performance, including extreme low energy and low cost, extreme coverage, higher than ever data and capacity rates, and extreme reliability (not to mention low latency being the norm) are a requirement for new technology, wireless power will be there to support it and empower its growth. That’s because wireless power, such as Cota, is:

  • Scalable, across devices, sensors, and space
  • Dependable, without the need for human intervention
  • Sustainable (removes the need to deploy and replace billion of batteries)
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Safe and secured
  • Cost effective
  • Free of wiring, batteries, or charging pads

Preparing for a New World of Technology

We are about to see connectivity like we’ve never seen before. Combinations of different systems functioning in tandem, integrations of different sensors and IoT, with layers of data feeding into AI.These sophisticated systems will be commonplace and expected.

For this new world, devices are being developed where they do not need to be “charged,” they’ll receive power through radio frequency signals. Low power consumption, ease of use and cost reduction will be musts.

We can’t be limited to grids, power lines, and fixed networks. Power must come from anywhere and be everywhere without worry about interference or access ports. We cannot deliver on this via traditional methods. Wireless power is the only realistic solution.

Cota is RF-based power over the air, without wires, without batteries, and at a distance, that is poised to support — and in fact, enable — the 5G and 6G technology boom.
